Foods That Start With J: A Kid-Friendly List

The easiest foods that start with J for kids are jam, jasmine rice, jicama sticks, Monterey Jack cheese and jiaozi (Chinese dumplings). For a longer list, J also gives you jackfruit, jujubes, jamun, jostaberries, jaboticaba, Jerusalem artichokes, jalapeños, jambalaya, jollof rice, japchae, johnnycakes, jerk chicken, jerky and jalebi. J is one of the generous letters, so you can build a whole lunch from it without leaving an ordinary supermarket.

Every food below is real, and each one gets a line on what it is. They’re grouped so a child hunting for “a J fruit” or “a J vegetable” can find one fast.

J fruits

  • Jackfruit — A very large tropical fruit, common in South and Southeast Asian cooking. Its yellow bulbs and its seeds are both edible, and it’s sold fresh, canned, frozen and dried.
  • Jujube — Also called red date or Chinese date. It’s eaten fresh, dried or candied. Jujubes have a stone in the middle, so remove it and chop the fruit small for young children.
  • Jamun — Also called Java plum or black plum (Syzygium cumini). A small, deep purple fruit native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. Look for it in Indian grocery stores in summer.
  • Jostaberry — A cross between a blackcurrant and two kinds of gooseberry. Grown more in gardens than sold in stores, but a real J berry.
  • Jaboticaba — A Brazilian fruit from several related trees. Small, round and purplish-black with white pulp, famous for growing directly on the tree’s trunk. Eaten raw or made into jams and juice.

J vegetables

  • Jicama — The edible root of a Mexican vine, sometimes called Mexican turnip. Peeled, it’s crisp, juicy and mild, which makes it a surprisingly good lunchbox vegetable. Raw and crunchy means grate or cut it into thin matchsticks for small children.
  • Jerusalem artichoke — Also called sunchoke. Not an artichoke at all, but the knobbly tuber of a sunflower native to central North America. Roast it like a potato.
  • Jalapeño — A medium-hot green chili pepper. Most kids meet it as a “no thank you” topping, but it counts.

J dishes

  • Jambalaya — A savory Louisiana rice dish of meat and/or seafood, vegetables, rice and spices, blending African, Spanish and French influences.
  • Jollof rice — A one-pot West African rice dish made with long-grain rice, tomatoes, onions, chilis and spices, sometimes with meat or vegetables. Its origins are traced to Senegal, and it’s a staple across the region.
  • Jiaozi — Chinese dumplings: a meat or vegetable filling wrapped in thin dough and sealed. They can be boiled, steamed or pan-fried, and the frozen ones are one of the fastest J dinners there is.
  • Japchae — A Korean dish of stir-fried glass noodles (made from sweet potato starch) with vegetables. Savory and slightly sweet.
  • Jook — Rice porridge: jūk is the Cantonese name for congee. Plain and soft, and a good food for a child who is under the weather.
  • Johnnycake — A cornmeal flatbread, also called a hoecake, eaten along the Atlantic coast from Newfoundland to Jamaica. It originates with Indigenous peoples of North America.
  • Jerk chicken — Jamaican chicken rubbed with a spiced marinade and grilled. Traditional jerk seasoning is hot, so a mild version is the kid-friendly route.
  • Jacket potato — The British name for a baked potato, usually split and topped with butter, cheese or beans.

J grains, cheeses and staples

  • Jasmine rice — A fragrant long-grain rice, grown mainly in Thailand and neighboring countries, moist and soft once cooked with a slightly sweet flavor.
  • Monterey Jack — A mild, slightly sweet, semi-hard white cheese from Monterey, California, often just called Jack. The J cheese most kids already eat without knowing it.
  • Jarlsberg — A mild, buttery Norwegian cheese in the Swiss style, with a slightly sweet, nutty flavor.
  • Jerky — Dried, seasoned strips of meat. Tough to chew, so it’s a food for older kids, not toddlers.

J sweets and treats

  • Jam and jelly — Fruit cooked with sugar until set. Jam keeps pieces of fruit; jelly is made from strained juice.
  • Jelly roll — The American name for a Swiss roll: a sponge cake spread with jam and rolled into a spiral.
  • Jalebi — A South Asian sweet: batter deep-fried in pretzel or circle shapes, then soaked in sugar syrup.
  • Jaffa Cakes — A British teatime cake made by McVitie’s since 1927, with a sponge base, a layer of orange jelly and a chocolate top.
  • Jelly beans — Chewy candy beans. Fine for older kids; not for toddlers.

Which J foods work for small children?

J has plenty of soft options: jasmine rice, jiaozi cut in half, jook, grated Monterey Jack, a thin layer of jam on toast, and ripe jackfruit pieces cut small.

The ones to handle with care are the chewy, hard and round ones. The American Academy of Pediatrics’ choking prevention guidance lists hard, gooey or sticky candy, raw vegetables such as carrot sticks, meat sticks, and chunks of cheese among the foods to avoid or modify for young children, advising that high-risk foods wait until around age 4 depending on the child. For J, that means jelly beans and jerky wait, jicama gets grated or cut thin, and cheese is grated or sliced thin rather than cubed.

A J lunchbox for letter-of-the-week

This one packs easily and comes home empty:

  1. Jiaozi, cooked the night before and served cool, with a little soy sauce for dipping.
  2. Jicama matchsticks for crunch (thin, for younger kids).
  3. Jasmine rice with a sprinkle of grated Monterey Jack.
  4. A spoonful of jam in a small pot to spread on a cracker.
