Microwave Corn on the Cob: Exact Times, Husk or No Husk

Microwave corn on the cob for 3–4 minutes per ear on high. No husk: wrap each shucked ear in a damp paper towel and microwave 3 minutes for one ear, adding about 2 minutes per additional ear. In the husk: microwave 4 minutes per ear, no prep at all — the husk steams the corn and slips off afterward with the silk attached. Either way, you get sweet, plump, evenly cooked corn faster than a pot of water can even boil.

We stopped boiling corn years ago. On a July weeknight, the microwave wins on speed, keeps the kitchen cool, and — this surprised us in testing — the corn tastes sweeter, because none of the sugars leach into cooking water.

Microwave times by number of ears

Times are for a standard 1,000–1,100 watt microwave on high. Lower-watt machines: add about 30 seconds per ear.

1 ear3 minutes4 minutes
2 ears5 minutes7 minutes
3 ears7 minutes9–10 minutes
4 ears8–9 minutes11–12 minutes

For more than 4 ears, do batches — crowding cooks unevenly. (Feeding a real crowd? Corn holds beautifully in a cooler with butter and hot water, grilled-corn-stand style; it’s a favorite side on our easy meals for a group list.)

Method 1: No husk (shucked corn)

Best when your corn is already shucked or you’re cooking from supermarket trays.

  1. Shuck the corn and pull off the silk.
  2. Wrap each ear in a damp paper towel. This is the step that matters — it traps steam so the kernels plump instead of shriveling.
  3. Microwave on high per the table above, arranging ears in a single layer like spokes.
  4. Rest 2 minutes (they finish cooking), unwrap carefully, and butter.

Kernels should look plump and bright, and a kernel should burst juicy when pressed with a thumbnail. If any ear feels firm, give it 30–60 seconds more.

Method 2: In the husk (zero prep)

Best when you want the least work and the cleanest shucking of your life.

  1. Trim any long tassel, then put the whole ears in the microwave — husk, silk, and all. No washing, no wrapping.
  2. Microwave on high per the table.
  3. Rest 2 minutes, then use the shucking trick below.

The husk is nature’s steamer bag: the moisture inside steams the kernels perfectly and keeps every bit of flavor in the ear.

The no-burn shucking trick

A just-microwaved husk is genuinely hot, so don’t wrestle it barehanded. Instead:

  1. Hold the ear with a kitchen towel or oven mitt.
  2. Cut off the stem end — about an inch up from the bottom, through the full thickness of husk and cob.
  3. Grab the tassel end and squeeze-shake. The ear slides out of the husk clean, leaving the silk behind in the husk like a sleeve.

When we tested this on a dozen ears for a backyard dinner, eleven came out completely silk-free — the twelfth needed one wipe with a paper towel. It’s the closest thing to a magic trick the microwave does.

Good to know

  • Don’t microwave corn dry and naked. An unwrapped, shucked ear steams out its own moisture and turns chewy. Husk or damp towel, always.
  • Butter after, not before. Butter under a paper towel just melts into the towel.
  • Seasoning ideas: butter + flaky salt is the classic; chili-lime butter, parmesan and black pepper, or an everything-bagel butter all take 30 seconds.
  • Make it dinner: microwave corn plus butter noodles is a legitimate 15-minute kid dinner, and the corn cooks while potatoes boil if you’re following our baby potato timing guide for a bigger spread.

FAQ

How long do you microwave corn on the cob without the husk?

Three minutes on high for one shucked ear wrapped in a damp paper towel, then about 2 more minutes for each additional ear (5 minutes for two, 7 for three). Rest 2 minutes before unwrapping.

Is it better to microwave corn with or without the husk?

In the husk is easier (zero prep, self-steaming, silk comes off in one pull) and slightly more flavorful. Without the husk is faster per ear and the only option for pre-shucked corn — just always use the damp paper towel.

Can you microwave 4 ears of corn at once?

Yes: 8–9 minutes shucked and wrapped, or 11–12 minutes in the husk, arranged in a single layer. Rotate or rearrange the ears halfway through so the ones in the middle cook evenly.

How do you know when microwaved corn is done?

The kernels look plump and vivid yellow, and one pierced with a thumbnail bursts with juice. Undercooked kernels look flat and feel firm — add 30–60 seconds and check again.
